Thoughts on Remains of the Day

I recently finished Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro. It’s gotten a lot of good reviews but didn’t personally love it.

It’s in first person written by a butler who works in a distinguished house in England pre and post WW2. Talks about his life, past experiences and some travels that he is going through.

It was a well written book and the literature made it easy to continue going through it. I just personally found it a bit uneventful.

It gave me empathy for what it means to a butler, but there are probably many other jobs/lifestyles I would have rather understood first. So didn’t necessarily learn a ton from it. Was easy to get through and it was short. Decently pleasant, but not riveting.

Find it interesting because this is supposedly one of Jeff Bezos’s favorite books. I probably don’t quite understand since I can’t appreciate well-written lit as much as others.

Thoughts on this review/the book in general? Comment or send me a note :)
