Salta & Jujuy

Just got back from a weekend trip to Northern Argentina in Salta and Jujuy. It was super beautiful.

Food

While there, I tried llama and rabbit. Llama tasted sort of like pork but was more salty. The rabbit tasted pretty similar to turkey I thought.

Both were tasty. I’d probably eat llama again, but not sure about rabbit.

Salt Flats

One of the days, we went to the Salinas Grandes, which are the third biggest salt flats in South America. They took my breath away. For miles and miles there was nothing but salt. I tasted it, and it was pretty standard salt. There are tons of resources to be extracted from that area and many salt flats hold a lot of lithium as well.

The images below make it look like it’s snow, but all of that is actually salt.

Seven colored mountain

We spent some time at Cerro de los Siete Colores as well, which is a mountain that is 7 different colors. The photos only capture so much how it looked, but it was one of the most breathtaking sites I have seen. There was so much color and contrast on the mountain and it’s surroundings.

The rest of the trip

Those were two of the highlights, but our trip held many other fun activities:

  • Staying in an Airbnb outside of Jujuy that was essentially in the middle of the forest
  • Taking the cable car to the top of the city of Salta for a beautiful view
  • A rainy and calm day spent at Parque Nacional Calilegua
  • Navigating tricky bus systems
  • Lots of empanadas
  • Other great views and time in nature

Very relaxing and fun overall. Anybody that spends a bunch of time in Argentina should definitely make this trip.
