Post 3-day fast

I didn’t motivate to write the day that I finished the fast (which was a bit under 3 days ago now), but I wanted to conclude about my experience and I’m sure I will come back to this in a few weeks time as I have gathered more thoughts and what I learned has shaped my eating lifestyle a bit more.

Overall, the fast was an extremely positive experience. I didn’t eat for 72 hours, but part of me feels like I cheated a bit because:

a). I started on a Sunday night and ended on a Wednesday night, meaning I pretty much got my daily nutrition in for the Sunday and then I ate a pretty decent amount of food on Wednesday, making it sort of only like a 2+ some change day fast.

b). I drank 1–2 cups of black coffee during the fast each day

Either way, though, I’ll talk a bit more about what I learned and how it’ll impact me moving forward.

  • It wasn’t that hard!

Might sound surprising, but honestly it wasn’t terrible. Not eating for that long sounds super intimidating and there were definitely some moments when I was pretty hungry, but given that I committed to it, the hunger wasn’t that big of a deal. Hardest part was probably the energy levels since I had to be in classes and doing work and stuff, but I was able to have pretty busy days and function well. The coffee probably helped.

I think this just reiterates to me how powerful our bodies can be.

  • I got pretty in tune with how my body felt

This might sound a little weird but on the last day I felt super in tune with my thoughts and body. Went for a nice productive walk and I don’t want to say I transcended since that’s a bit strong, but it was a bit spiritual for me

  • Not eating/being hungry moving forward

Since I stopped fasting I’ve definitely been eating a pretty fair amount of food. That being said, it has been out of choice and I’ve honestly felt a bit of a ‘well I forewent ~5000 calories earlier this week, so I don’t feel as bad overeating ab it now.’

In general, it’s changed my perspective about the nutrition that I need to function and that I can take micro fasts and that when I feel hungry in any given moment, it’s really not that hard to just push through and not eat.

  • This is just the beginning

Food is a huge part of my life (and everyone’s in some degree). Better understanding what it food I need to function, that I can go for a while without food and what it means to really be hungry has widened my perspective about how I look at food. It also makes me want to explore further and better understand what types of food and nutrients I personally need to feel energetic and strong each day.

  • *If I ever for some reason end up in some situation where I literally cannot eat for an extended amount of time, I will be more prepared.

Happy to talk to anybody who’s thinking about doing this. Just reach out! Would recommend :)
