Lima
I spent a week in Lima. I didn’t explore the city as much as I could have, and I also did not like Lima (as a city) as much as I did the other large cities I have been in. Nonetheless, it was a great week.
Food
One of the most special aspects of Lima is the food. They have awesome ceviche, chicharrones, a national drink called the Pisco Sour (with an alcohol called Pisco, lime juice, syrup, egg white and bitters — they even have a national holiday for it and it’s really good), and other food. There’s a root called Yuka that’s really good too.
Everything there is also really cheap. We went to an outdoor market to buy fruit and nuts and there’s no comparison to the prices with the US.
Parks & beaches
There are tons of parks in Lima. It’s a big thing there and they are super pretty. Good places to run and spend time.
There are also lots of beaches. I wish I got to go surfing, but didn’t get around to it.
Climate
This is one of the big problems in Lima. I know nothing about what is truly going on, but the air was terrible. I felt like I was getting cancer by running outside because of all the pollution. The city has also been dramatically altered.
Although there are some really nice parks, outside of those, it feels very much like a big, busy city. I didn’t like those vibes, and I believe there is an extreme amount of poverty in the city.
I also heard that all of the pollution there is making the climate more humid, which is a bit scary.
People
The people in Lima were super nice! One thing I’ve continued to be blown away by with South America has been the people. So much warmth and kindness and love.
It’s cool because similar to Cusco, there are lots of family businesses. Adds more character and love to the city instead of these huge corporations everywhere.
What else
- Not sure how I feel about writing much on it here, but I had an experience related to Ayahuasca that was extremely interesting and took up a big portion of the week (lemme know if you’re interested in talking about it, gonna write a hidden post)
- Lots of boiling tap water and sticking it in the fridge so we could drink it
- Tons of juice smoothies in the mornings
- Cool visits to plazas and museums
- Went to a regular mall that’s on the side of a cliff
- Walked around a bunch
- Park of Love
- Meeting locals
- Uber is really cheap (and illegal, officially)
