Comfort Zones

When was the last time that you pushed yourself out of your comfort zone? What about the time that you pushed yourself out of your comfort zone the most?

It’s interesting because I don’t have great answers to either of those questions. Despite that fact that I pride myself on being willing to try new things, I can’t think of many moments where I felt super uncomfortable in a situation that I created totally on purpose.

What does it mean to go out of your comfort zone?

For everyone it’s different. It could be trying a new vegetable or going out to a club or going to introduce yourself to a cute girl you see.

It’s noteworthy that there are certain things society would deem as more out of your comfort zone than others. So I think that I actually do some of those things that society might deem to be out of most people’s comfort zones despite them feeling comfortable for me.

Because of that, am I really stepping out of my comfort zone? I’d say the answer is no.

Objectively, or from someone else’s perspective, that answer might be a hard yes, but not from mine.

Do it more often

Most people, especially those in college, would pride themselves on growing as a person, learning new things, and trying different things. Yet, I would argue that many don’t frequently step out of their comfort zone. It’s so important, though, because if we don’t, then our experiences remain limited. We only try certain things and that gives us a). less understanding for the world around us and b). less opportunities to find passions, interests and skills.

It can be really scary. Going up to talk to that random person or putting ourselves out on a limb. Who cares though? We’ll all be dead in 100 years anyway (at least most likely), so why not try new things and not worry about what others thing at this current point in time. Life’s too short :)
